I don’t meant to be a Negative Nelly, but I have to tell you I’m not too crazy about New Year’s Eve or even it’s sidekick, New Year’s Day. My main beef is that it’s just another calendar day and the new year doesn’t look or feel any different than the last, but there are satellite beefs, as well. I will share them with you.
For one thing, there’s a lot of kissing that goes on at the stroke of midnight, and we all know what that means: germs. But cooties aside, I’ve always had a social kissing phobia because not only am I tactile defensive, but I never know which angle you are going to be coming in from. It’s how I ended up kissing my friend’s husband’s ear that one time and another time, my dentist’s neck. And when I used to wear glasses, I would always and without fail knock lenses with any old lady who ever tried to kiss me. I think it’s an unwritten rule about old ladies with over-sized glasses. They have no depth perception.
The second beef is resolutions. Who needs them?
The third beef is people shooting guns into the air.
The fourth beef is Dick Clark. I get nervous just thinking about him going on live TV.
The fifth and final beef is that for as long as I can remember, I always get depressed on New Year’s Day. Maybe it’s yuletide aftermath, maybe it’s a hangover fatigue, maybe it’s the fact that I’m looking down the barrel of three to four more months of grey Cleveland skies and snow. I don’t know.
On the other hand, the new year is a fresh start, a blank slate to mark up any way I wish, and I like that.
I hope to make it fabulous, and I wish the same for you.
And that’s my two cents about New Year’s.

Hmmm. I feel the opposite, I guess. I’ve always loved both days. In my younger years New Years Eve was always a fun party (although most of the time a big letdown, the anticipation of it all certainly was fun), and New Years Day just always feels so fresh and hopeful. Especially this year because the Badgers are in the Rose Bowl!!! Woot woot!!!! jk Kind of.
Anyway, I think it is good to reflect back a bit and remember all the big and small events of the past year (and this time even the past decade) and then look ahead to the next year with high hopes. It is all about hope. The new year is hopeful. And every day is hopeful, but there is something about the turning of the year. Hmmm.
As for resolutions, I think they are silly. You shouldn’t wait for New Years Day to make changes and make yourself and your life better. Everyday is a new chance.
See how hopeful I sound? It’s the New Year I tell you!!!!!
Hope you have a wonderful one!

I get depressed on New Year’s Eve but by the next day I’ve usually rebounded…unless I’m nursing a hangover, but this year I’m just plain nursing so have a drink for me okay?
Happy New Year?
